A Project in Prague for a Few Months: A Car Without Multi-Year Commitment

If you are coming to Prague for a project that will last months rather than years, the most practical option is a long-term car rental for a fixed period: the vehicle is at your disposal for the whole duration of your work, and when the project ends, you return the keys and nothing further binds you. At JJ Rent Car, long-term rental starts from two months, while shorter needs are covered by short-term rental from one day.

This article is not a general overview but a timeline. We will walk through it in four phases: before your arrival, the first week, day-to-day use, and the end of your project.

Why Buying or Leasing for Years Makes No Sense for a Project

A project has a start, an end and often a changing scope. The team may grow, the deadline may shift, or the work may move to a different location. Buying a car or taking out a traditional multi-year lease does not allow for any of this: you have to deal with registration, insurance and servicing, and later with selling the car or terminating the contract early.

With a rental, all of this is part of the service. All vehicles have compulsory third-party liability insurance and collision insurance, and in the event of an accident the client pays an excess depending on the type of insurance. The rental company, not you, takes care of the rest. You can find details on how we work together on the long-term rental page and under operating leasing.

Phase 1: Before You Arrive

Most things can be arranged from home. Please have the following ready:

  • Documents: a valid driving licence and proof of identity; the minimum driver age is 21,
  • List of drivers: who will actually be using the car,
  • Estimated project length: a range is sufficient, and an extension can be arranged,
  • Estimated mileage: for longer rentals the daily limit decreases; for rentals of 30 days or more it is 100 km per day, and for operating leasing the allowance is 3,000 km per month,
  • Handover location: the Westfield Černý Most branch, or delivery of the car within Prague by arrangement.

If you hold a driving licence issued outside Europe, please check the conditions in advance by phone on +420 703 149 146 or by email at [email protected]. This will spare you unnecessary complications at pick-up. An overview of the requirements is also available on the terms and conditions page.

Phase 2: Your First Week in Prague

The first few days are the most demanding, as you are arranging accommodation, an office and registrations. At this point, the car should make your work easier, not add to it.

  • Plan your pick-up so that you have time to inspect the car and photograph its condition.
  • Find out where you will park at your accommodation and at your client's premises.
  • Drive the route you will use every day before your first important meeting.

Vehicle delivery is particularly useful for companies that send specialists to the site who are not familiar with the city. It is arranged by phone or email.

Phase 3: Day-to-Day Use – Which Car for Which Role

On a project, not everyone drives in the same way. Here is an indicative breakdown:

  • A project manager who travels to see customers: the Škoda Octavia with a 1.6 TDI diesel engine and manual transmission is a sensible choice for business trips. We write more about it in our article on the Octavia Sedan.
  • A team that transports materials or travels to a construction site outside the city: the Škoda Kodiaq with 4x4 drive, automatic transmission and a 2.0 TDI diesel engine.
  • Colleagues who mostly travel within the city: the Škoda Enyaq iV, an electric car with automatic transmission and navigation, provided you have somewhere to charge it.

Navigation is listed as not included in the Octavia, so you will need to use your phone. In the Kodiaq and Enyaq, navigation is included.

Phase 4: Extension and Ending Your Rental

Projects tend to run over. That is why it is best to let the rental company know in good time, rather than on the day of return. Please arrange an extension by phone and check whether the car is available for the further period.

When the rental ends:

  • return the car on the agreed date and at the agreed place,
  • check its condition and the fuel or charge level as agreed,
  • settle any overpayments or outstanding balances in line with the contractual terms.

Because you have not signed a contract for years, you need not deal with selling the car or terminating a contract early.

Trips Outside Prague and Abroad

A project often involves meetings outside the city. Travel abroad is possible only by prior arrangement and only to EU countries. Assistance services are also compulsory when travelling abroad. Please tell the rental company when you place your order, not just before you set off. We describe other business situations in our article on car rental in Prague for companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to commit to a year or more?

No. Long-term rental starts from two months, and you decide the length according to the needs of your project. We recommend confirming the specific conditions with the rental company.

Can I extend the rental if the project runs longer?

Usually yes, provided the car is still available. Please let us know as soon as possible by phone or email.

What documents do I need?

A valid driving licence, proof of identity and a minimum age of 21. The amount of the deposit is stated in the details of the specific vehicle.

Can we use the car for a business trip to Germany or Austria?

Yes, within the EU, but only by prior arrangement and with compulsory assistance services.
