An estate car is sufficient for a family holiday if there are at most four of you and your luggage fits in the boot along with a pram. A Škoda Kodiaq with 7 seats is worth considering when six or seven people are travelling in the car, or when two families go on a trip together. First, count the heads, car seats and luggage. Only then should you choose the vehicle model.
Start with the Number of Passengers, Not the Model
Every vehicle in our range has at least five seats. But five seats do not mean five adults with full luggage. For families with children, equipment takes up more space than the passengers themselves.
Before you start choosing, write down:
- how many people will travel and their sizes (a child in a car seat takes up more space than a slim adult),
- how many child car seats you need and what type,
- how much luggage and what equipment you have (pram, bikes, roof box, beach items),
- how many days you will travel and what the total distance will be.
Three Typical Family Groups and How to Fit Them
1. Two Parents and Two Children for a Week at the Sea
Four people, two car seats, one large suitcase, two smaller bags and a pram. This is the classic scenario for a Škoda Octavia estate. An estate car offers a long cargo area and the car seats fit well side by side on the rear bench. If you want more comfort for long drives, consider the Superb estate with automatic transmission and sat nav.
2. Two Parents, Three Children and More Luggage
This is where it gets tricky. Three car seats side by side on the rear bench may not fit, depending on their type and size. An estate car might still work, but bring the seats with you to check, or call ahead to discuss. If you are unsure, a Kodiaq with a third row of seats is the safer choice.
3. Two Families, Grandparents or Six to Seven People
An estate car won't do here. The Kodiaq with 7 seats is ideal for groups who don't want to travel in two separate cars. Bear in mind that when fully occupied, the luggage space will be reduced. A roof box is practical, or pack items based on what you'll need on the journey.
If you are four or five people and prefer an SUV, consider the Škoda Kodiaq 4x4 with five seats. It is suitable for mountain cottages and longer journeys with more equipment.
Child Car Seats: Sort This Out Before You Leave
Child seats are the most common source of stress at departure time. You have two options: bring your own, which your child is used to, or ask about availability in advance. Don't rely on guesswork—verify availability and terms by phone or email through contact. For more information on how to enquire about car seats, see the article Car rental Prague: children and car seats.
Practical tips:
- Test your own car seat in the vehicle immediately upon pick-up, not the evening before departure.
- With ISOFIX car seats, make sure the vehicle has the necessary anchors. Ask when booking.
- A child in a car seat plus an adult beside it takes up more rear bench space than you might expect.
Luggage: How to Pack It
Family luggage follows a simple rule: heavy items down and at the back, soft items on top. What you'll need during the journey (snacks, nappies, spare clothes) should go in the cabin or in a bag at the top, not at the bottom of the boot.
- Load the pram and large suitcase first.
- Squeeze soft bags into the gaps.
- Don't load anything above the level of the seat backs—rear visibility must remain clear.
- If you keep running out of space during the journey, it's a sign you need a larger vehicle, not better packing.
Travelling Abroad in the EU
Most families head to neighbouring countries. These are our rules:
- travel abroad only by prior agreement and only to EU countries,
- roadside assistance is compulsory when travelling abroad,
- all vehicles have third-party liability and fully comprehensive insurance; in case of an accident, the client pays the excess according to their insurance type.
Declare your destination country and dates when booking. For details, see rental terms.
Mileage Allowance for Your Holiday
The daily mileage limit decreases with rental length. For example, with the Octavia estate, Superb estate and Kodiaq 4x4, the limit is 250 km per day for 2–5 days and 200 km per day for 6–14 days. For a ten-day holiday, that means a total limit of 2,000 km. If you're heading to a distant destination and back, the kilometres add up quickly, so work out your route in advance, including local trips. For the Kodiaq 7-seater, check the vehicle details for its mileage limits. All this is also covered in the article Škoda Kodiaq 7-seater for Rent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Estate Car Enough for a Family of Four?
Yes, if you're not carrying a lot of extra equipment. The Octavia estate or Superb estate can handle four people, two car seats and luggage for a week's holiday.
When Is the Kodiaq 7-Seater Better?
When six or seven people are travelling, or when grandparents or friends join the family. For four to five people with lots of equipment, a five-seater SUV may also suffice.
Can I Travel Abroad in a Rental Car?
Yes, to EU countries, but only by prior agreement. Roadside assistance is compulsory when travelling abroad.
Will You Deliver the Car to My Home?
Delivery within Prague is available by arrangement via phone or email, which is convenient when leaving with fully-loaded children.
