Car Rental Mileage Limit: How to Calculate It and Plan Your Route

A car rental mileage limit determines how many kilometres per day you may drive the vehicle under your rental agreement. At JJ Rent Car, the limit depends on the length of the rental: it is highest for a one-day rental (300 km per day) and decreases with each longer rental band, down to 100 km per day for rentals of 30 days or more. To plan your trip, simply multiply the daily limit by the number of days and compare the result with your intended route.

How the Mileage Limit Is Calculated

The daily rate is charged per 24 hours, and each day comes with a daily mileage allowance. The limit applies according to the total length of the rental, not according to how far you drive on any particular day. You can therefore distribute the total distance as you wish: a longer excursion one day, and only short drives around the city the next.

Bands for vehicles in our fleet (for the Fabia, Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq and Enyaq iV):

  • 1 day: 300 km per day
  • 2–5 days: 250 km per day
  • 6–14 days: 200 km per day
  • 15–29 days: 150 km per day
  • 30 or more days: 100 km per day

For the Kodiaq 7-seater, Enyaq Coupé iV and Porsche Cayenne Electric, the limits are not listed in the overview; you will find their specific terms on the vehicle's detail page, or you can confirm them by phone.

Why the Limit Decreases with the Length of the Rental

From a customer's perspective this may seem illogical, but the reason is practical. The total mileage on a longer rental is high in any case. For example, seven days at 200 km means 1,400 km in total, which is a considerable distance. A short rental, on the other hand, is often used for one intensive trip or business journey, where a higher daily allowance is needed.

It is also related to vehicle wear: the more kilometres a car covers, the sooner it needs servicing, new tyres and maintenance. The limit therefore helps keep the vehicle in good condition for our next customers. You can find the exact terms for exceeding the limit in the rental terms and conditions, or we will go through them with you when you make your reservation.

How to Plan Your Route According to the Limit

The process is simple and takes just a few minutes:

  1. Calculate your total limit. Multiply the number of days by the daily limit for the relevant band. A three-day rental therefore means 3 × 250 km, i.e. 750 km.
  2. Measure your route. Enter the entire journey into a map, including the return trip and any detours.
  3. Add a margin. Allow for extra kilometres: searching for parking, detours for lunch, and the drive to the pick-up point.
  4. Compare. If you are under the limit, make your reservation. If you are over it, consider a different rental length band or adjusting your route.

One interesting effect to bear in mind: it is sometimes more advantageous to rent a car for one day longer, as this gives you both a higher daily limit and a higher total number of kilometres. Alternatively, ask us about a tailored solution by phone.

Typical Situations and a Suitable Car

A weekend trip from Prague (2–3 days). With a limit of 250 km per day, you can manage a circuit around the Czech Republic as well as longer excursions. For a party of four with luggage, the Škoda Octavia Combi with its large boot is a good choice. You can find inspiration for destinations in our trip tips and in the article Weekend Car Rental from Prague.

A one-day business trip. The one-day band with a 300 km limit covers, for example, a round of visits to several clients in Bohemia. A comfortable choice for longer routes is the Škoda Superb Combi with automatic transmission and navigation.

City driving and short journeys. If you mainly drive around Prague, the Škoda Fabia is all you need. The lower limit on a longer rental will not matter, as you will only cover a few dozen kilometres a day.

A longer project or replacement vehicle. For rentals of two months or more, long-term rental or operating leasing with an allowance of 3,000 km per month makes sense. If you expect to drive a greater number of kilometres, please check the terms in advance.

What to Watch Out For

  • Travel abroad. This is possible only by prior agreement and only to EU countries, and assistance cover is mandatory. Include the return journey in your mileage plan. Read more in the article Taking a Rental Car Abroad within the EU and on the services page.
  • Electric cars. With the Škoda Enyaq iV, charging needs to be planned in addition to the mileage limit. Divide a long route into stages.
  • Vehicle delivery. If we deliver the car to you within Prague, take this into account when planning the first and last day.
  • Odometer. When taking over the car, check the odometer reading and have it recorded in the handover protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the mileage limit daily or total?

It is set per day, but applied as a sum for the entire rental. You can therefore distribute the kilometres between days as you need.

What if I need to drive more than the limit allows?

Please write or call us in advance on +420 703 149 146 or at [email protected]. We will discuss the options before you sign the agreement, not after the car is returned.

Why is the limit lower for a long rental?

The total mileage on a longer rental is high in any case, and a lower daily limit helps keep the vehicle in good condition. Operating leasing with an allowance of 3,000 km per month is designed for high mileage.

Is the limit the same for all cars?

For most models in the overview, yes. For a few vehicles the details differ, so always check the detail page of the specific car.
