When your car ends up at a body shop after an accident, the most practical solution is to rent a vehicle that handles your regular work and family duties while accounting for the fact that repairs may take longer than expected. At JJ Rent Car, you can rent a car from just one day onwards, and extend the rental as needed by arrangement. For an uncertain repair timeline, a reasonably spacious estate car typically works well, for example Škoda Octavia Combi, and you can adjust the return date as the repair progresses.
Why Accident Repairs Are Different from Routine Service
With an oil change, you know the car will be ready by evening. After an accident, it's different. You're waiting for an insurance assessment, parts are on order, paint work is underway, and sometimes further damage is discovered during disassembly. The deadline the workshop initially gives you is therefore more of an estimate.
This has three implications for choosing a replacement car:
- You don't know exactly how long you'll need the car. Plan for days or even weeks, and ask about extension options.
- You'll drive more kilometres than you expect. Commuting, business trips and family responsibilities continue as normal.
- You need reliability, not improvisation. A vehicle that won't let you down mid-week will save you far more stress than saving a bit on size.
As a general rule, you as the customer are responsible for the rental costs. Whether and how much your insurance company will cover is something you should verify directly with them. We cannot make any guarantees on that front.
How to Estimate Duration and Kilometres
Daily rates are charged per 24 hours, and the daily kilometre limit decreases the longer you rent. For vehicles in our fleet, these limits apply:
- 1 day: 300 km/day
- 2–5 days: 250 km/day
- 6–14 days: 200 km/day
- 15–29 days: 150 km/day
- 30 days and more: 100 km/day
In practice, this is a straightforward calculation. Work out how many kilometres you typically drive per week (commute, children, clients), multiply by the number of days, and compare it to the limit for the bracket you'll likely fall into. We look at route planning in more detail in our article on kilometre limits, where you'll also find older pieces. If your total comes out well above the limit, consider opting for a longer period bracket with clear conditions rather than settling it after returning the car.
Which Vehicle to Choose Depending on Your Situation
Commuting around Prague, two people, short repair. Škoda Fabia is compact, easy to park, and sufficient for a few days. It has air conditioning but no navigation system, so plan to use your phone with a mount.
Family, children, shopping, boot space. Octavia Combi makes sense here. It's the same class many people drive daily, so you won't need to adjust. It's diesel-powered (1.6 TDI) with a manual gearbox—worth noting if you're used to an automatic.
Longer journeys and business use. If you spend a lot of time on motorways, Superb Combi with automatic transmission, navigation and generous space is ideal. During a multi-week repair, you'll appreciate the comfort every single day.
Mountains, winter or more passengers. Kodiaq with 4x4 drive is the choice if your regular car happens to need repairs just before the winter season. Always check the specific vehicle's current equipment, though.
What to Prepare Before Collection
Collection is quick when you have everything to hand. According to our terms, you need:
- a valid driving licence,
- an identity document,
- a minimum age of 21,
- a deposit depending on the vehicle type (you'll find the amount in the vehicle details).
If you're unable to come in because your car is at the shop and you're stranded, use our vehicle delivery service around Prague. It's arranged by phone or email. Insurance is handled through third-party liability and comprehensive coverage; in the event of an accident, the customer pays a contribution according to the insurance type. Full terms are available in our conditions.
When Repairs Stretch to Weeks or Months
Sometimes what was supposed to be "a week at the body shop" stretches into a month, perhaps due to parts delays. At that point, it makes sense to stop extending by the day and look at long-term rental. Long-term rental and contract hire start from two months with 3000 km per month mileage. If the repair is approaching that length, give us a call and we'll discuss what makes sense. It's practical to mention at the time of booking that the date might change. You don't want to be sorting out extensions late the evening before return.
For travel abroad during rental, note that it's only possible with prior agreement and only to EU countries, with roadside assistance being mandatory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know the exact return date in advance?
No. Give an estimate based on the workshop's timeline and mention during booking that it might change. Arrange any extension as soon as possible by phone or email via contact.
Does insurance cover the replacement car?
That depends on your insurance policy and the circumstances of the accident. Ask your insurer directly. You can make a reservation with us independently of that.
Which vehicle is best for two weeks?
For most people, a mid-class estate car is the answer. In the 6–14 day bracket, the limit is 200 km/day, which covers a typical week of commuting plus weekend trips.
Can I take the replacement car abroad?
Only with prior agreement and only to EU countries. Roadside assistance is mandatory for trips abroad.
