Replacement Car During Servicing or Repairs: From One Day to Several Weeks

The easiest way to arrange a replacement car in Prague while yours is being repaired is to rent one in the usual way. You choose a vehicle, book the dates according to the expected length of the repair, and collect the car with a valid driving licence and proof of identity. For a one-day service, a short-term rental from 1 day is enough. For a longer repair after an accident or a major fault, allow some extra time and extend the rental if necessary. Below you will find a guide to both situations.

When a replacement car comes in handy

Being without your own car is hardest in the morning, when you need to get to work, take the children to school or visit clients. Typical situations include:

  • Scheduled service or MOT (STK) – the car stays in the workshop for one or two days.
  • Tyre change or a minor repair – a car for one day is all you need.
  • Repair after an accident or damage – the workshop is waiting for parts, and the repair may drag on for weeks.
  • Company vehicle out of service – a sales representative or a delivery van simply has to keep running.

If your insurer or garage entitles you to a courtesy car, please check with them first. If not, or if you need a different type of vehicle, renting is a simple solution.

A replacement car for one day or a few days

For a short period, you can use a short-term rental from 1 day. The daily rate is charged per 24 hours, so plan your pick-up time according to when you will be returning the car. It is good to know the following:

  • The mileage limit is 300 km per day for a one-day rental and 250 km per day for 2–5 days.
  • For everyday driving around Prague, this is usually more than enough.
  • If you do not have time to come to our branch, the car can be delivered to you in Prague after arrangement by phone or e-mail. You can read more about how this works in our article on vehicle delivery.

The Škoda Fabia with a 1.0 TSI engine, manual transmission and air conditioning is well suited to city driving. It is compact, easy to park and practical for commuting or shopping trips.

A replacement car for several weeks

When a repair takes longer, keep an eye on how the mileage limit changes. The daily limit decreases as the rental period gets longer:

  • 6–14 days: 200 km per day,
  • 15–29 days: 150 km per day,
  • 30 days or more: 100 km per day.

If you usually drive more than this each day, work out in advance how many kilometres you will actually cover. If you know you will need the car for two months or longer, consider a long-term rental or operating leasing. These are intended for periods of two months or more, with a mileage allowance of 3,000 km per month.

A practical tip: rent the car for the expected length of the repair, and arrange any extension well in advance by phone. Workshops sometimes postpone their deadlines, especially when they are waiting for spare parts.

Which car to choose for your needs

Choose a car according to what you will be using it for, not according to the car you have at home.

  • Commuting and city driving: Škoda Fabia, or alternatively the Fabia vRS with automatic transmission and satnav.
  • Family, shopping, luggage: Škoda Octavia Combi with a 1.6 TDI diesel engine and a spacious five-seat estate body.
  • Business trips, longer journeys: Škoda Superb Combi with automatic transmission and satnav.
  • Larger groups: Kodiaq 7-seater, if your family or team needs more seats.

If you are used to an automatic, choose a car with automatic transmission when you book, so that you do not have to adapt to something different behind the wheel.

How to arrange it step by step

  1. Find out from your garage when the car will be ready, and add some extra time.
  2. Choose a car according to the number of passengers, luggage and daily mileage.
  3. Book your dates online, or call +420 703 149 146.
  4. Have a valid driving licence and proof of identity ready. The minimum age is 21.
  5. Please allow for a deposit, the amount of which depends on the type of car and is shown in the car's details.
  6. Collect the car at the Westfield Černý Most branch (Chlumecká 765/6, Prague 14), or have it delivered to you by arrangement.

When you collect the car, it is worth checking its condition and having any defects noted down. All vehicles have compulsory third-party liability insurance and collision insurance; in the event of an accident, the client pays an excess depending on the type of insurance. You will find further details in the terms and conditions.

A replacement car for your company

If your company vehicles are stuck in the workshop, a quick arrangement will help. Companies can use a rental for a few days as well as a longer-term cooperation. Simply call or write to [email protected] and we will agree on a suitable car and dates.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to book the car in advance?

We recommend that you do, especially if you need a specific type of car or an automatic. A reservation ensures that the vehicle will be ready for you. A quick arrangement by phone is also possible.

What if the repair takes longer than expected?

Please call us as soon as possible and arrange an extension. The availability of the car for a longer period depends on other bookings, so it is better not to put it off.

Can I take the replacement car abroad?

Only by prior agreement and only to EU countries. Assistance services are mandatory when travelling abroad.

How many kilometres can I drive per day?

The limit decreases with the length of the rental: from 300 km per day for a 1-day rental down to 100 km per day for 30 days or more. For long-term rental and leasing, the allowance is 3,000 km per month.
