Taking a Rental Car Abroad in the EU: Agreement, Assistance, Documents

With a rental car from our car rental company, you may travel to other European Union countries, but you must agree this in advance and have the mandatory assistance service for the trip. Please do not take the car across the border without prior agreement. Motorway vignettes and tolls must then be arranged according to the specific country you will be driving through. Below you will find a step-by-step guide, so that you do not have to deal with anything at the border.

Step 1: Agree your trip before booking

We permit trips abroad only by prior agreement and only to EU countries. Therefore, please first clarify the following:

  • which countries you will visit and in what order,
  • when you will depart and when you will return,
  • how many people and how much luggage you will be carrying.

Write to us at [email protected] or call +420 703 149 146. We will go through the route with you and confirm that it can be completed with the car you have chosen. If you change your plans during the trip (for example, by adding another country), please let us know before you travel there.

Step 2: Plan for the mandatory assistance service

Assistance is mandatory when travelling abroad. All our vehicles have compulsory third-party liability insurance and collision insurance, but a technical failure or a flat tyre a thousand kilometres from Prague is a different situation from an insurance claim. Assistance provides help on the spot, so you will not be left on your own in a foreign country.

In practice, this means:

  • ask about assistance when arranging the trip, not when collecting the keys,
  • save the contacts we give you in your phone,
  • in the event of an accident, the excess still applies according to the type of insurance you have arranged.

You can find broader information about insurance in the article on additional insurance at a car rental company. Please always verify the details directly with us.

Step 3: Prepare your documents

To rent a car, you need a valid driving licence and proof of identity, and you must be at least 21 years old. The deposit depends on the type of car and can be found on the page for the specific vehicle. For a trip abroad, you should also:

  • bring a document valid for entry to the given country (an ID card or passport, according to the rules of your destination),
  • ask us to confirm that you have everything necessary for the car, and keep the vehicle documents in the car at all times,
  • check that your driving licence will remain valid for the entire duration of the trip.

The rental terms are summarised on the rental terms page. If you are unsure what to bring, please ask us in advance.

Step 4: Sort out motorway vignettes and tolls

Each country handles road charges in its own way: some use an electronic vignette, while others charge at toll gates or by distance travelled. We therefore do not set a single rule here, but we recommend the following approach:

  • before departure, find out how tolls are paid in each country on your route,
  • obtain vignettes or electronic payments in good time, ideally before the border,
  • when collecting the car, please check with us about any vignette already affixed or purchased, if there is one on the vehicle,
  • keep your payment confirmations.

Failing to pay a toll abroad may result in a fine that arrives only after your return. It is better to pay on time.

Step 5: Calculate your mileage

The daily mileage limit decreases with the length of the rental. For a short rental of 2–5 days, it is 250 km per day; for 6–14 days, it is 200 km per day. On a four-day trip, you therefore have a total of 1,000 km available, and on a seven-day trip, 1,400 km. Please include the return journey and any detours in your plan. The daily rate is charged per 24 hours, so please time your pick-up and return according to your plans.

Which car to choose for a trip around Europe

Navigation is included in the Superb and Kodiaq, but not in the Octavia Combi. If your car does not have it, please plan to use navigation on your phone.
