For a sole trader or small business, long-term rental usually pays off when you need predictable costs, fewer operational worries and the option to change vehicles over time. Buying makes sense when you will use the car for many years, drive a high mileage and want to own the vehicle. The decision does not rest on a single price, but on four things: cash flow, servicing, insurance and flexibility. We will go through them one by one.
Cash flow: a large one-off investment or a regular payment
Buying a car means either paying a larger sum at once or taking out a loan or instalment purchase. Either way, it puts a strain on your budget and on the company reserve, which you might prefer to use for contracts, materials or wages.
With long-term rental, you avoid a one-off investment in a vehicle. Regular costs are easier to plan. You will find the specific terms on the vehicle's detail page, and we will gladly go through them with you by phone.
- Buying: a high initial investment, the vehicle's value declines over time, and you handle the sale of the used car yourself.
- Renting: no investment in the vehicle; you pay for its use.
- What to check with your accountant: the tax treatment differs depending on the form of business and the method of acquisition, so always consult a professional.
Servicing and operational worries
Owning a car means that you deal with regular inspections, tyres and repairs yourself, as well as the periods when the vehicle is in the workshop. For a sole trader, every day without a car is lost business.
With rental, different obligations are attached to the vehicle than with ownership. However, always clarify in advance the scope of services and what is included in the price, ideally in the terms and conditions or in person. If you only need a car for a while until yours is repaired, a short-term rental can also help; the situation for companies is summarised in our article on car rental for businesses.
Insurance: what applies to a rented vehicle
All our vehicles have compulsory third-party liability insurance and collision insurance. In the event of an accident, the client pays an excess depending on the type of insurance. With your own car, you arrange, compare and pay for insurance yourself, and its terms depend on your history and the type of vehicle.
With rental, clarify in advance which excess will apply and what the contract does not cover. If you are unsure, please call us on +420 703 149 146.
Flexibility: what if your contracts change
A small business changes quickly. A new contract requires a larger vehicle, at other times a smaller one is enough, or your routes change. A purchased vehicle ties you down, selling it takes time and its value may fall.
We offer long-term rental and operating leasing from two months with a mileage of 3,000 km per month. It suits a project, a new employee's probationary period or a season.
Which vehicle suits your business
- Škoda Fabia: a city car for a sole trader who drives mainly in Prague and the surrounding area. It has 5 seats, air conditioning and a 1.0 TSI engine.
- Škoda Octavia Combi: a 1.6 TDI engine, manual transmission and a large boot for materials, samples or tools.
- Škoda Superb Combi: automatic transmission, navigation and comfort for longer business trips and client visits.
- Škoda Enyaq iV: an electric SUV, if you would like to try electromobility before deciding on a larger investment.
The mileage limit decreases with the length of the rental: for 30 days or more it is 100 km per day, and for 15–29 days it is 150 km per day. If you expect high mileage, take this into account when choosing a vehicle and, if needed, ask us for advice.
When buying makes sense
Rental is not always suitable. Buying is a good choice if:
- you use the car continuously for many years,
- you drive significantly above the usual mileage limits,
- you need the vehicle specially modified or branded,
- you have enough free capital and your own servicing facilities.
If you are unsure, try renting for a few weeks first. You will find out which vehicle you really need, and only then decide on buying.
